It was originally called "Decoration Day" and instituted not long after the end of the Civil War for the purpose of memorializing the "Union" soldiers who fought and died in that conflict.
The Civil War claimed at least 620,000 soldiers' lives in addition to untold numbers of civilian casualties.
It is good I think that we should remember those who have given their lives in service to their country.

It is a good thing to remember and honor those who have died for this country but I'm afraid that not too many people do that anymore. I'm curious what the demographics are for those who go to the cemetaries this weekend. I'm willing to bet that there are few young adults. I'm afraid that to most people this is nothing more than a long weekend.
We had a very moving church service this morning honoring the military but I will not be going to Arlington Cemetery today.
For one thing, the Rolling Thunder are in town and traffic is impossible, especially in that are.
But more importantly, I will be going on May 30, the REAL Memorial Day and my Daddy's birthday. He used to tease and say that there was a holiday just for his birthday.
